Outcome and Subsequent Developments
The campaign achieved its funding goal, allowing the B-17 Alliance Group to proceed with the disassembly and relocation of “Lacey Lady” in August 2014. The aircraft was carefully lowered from its 20-foot perch using specialized rigging, marking a significant milestone in its preservation. Components were transported to the group’s facilities at McNary Field in Salem, Oregon, for indoor storage and restoration. This effort protected the airframe from ongoing environmental damage and initiated a comprehensive volunteer-driven restoration project aimed at returning the aircraft to airworthy condition.
As of May 2025, the restoration remains active under the B-17 Alliance Foundation, progressing steadily despite its long-term nature. Key advancements include:
- Disassembly and cataloging of major sections, with the nose and ball turret restored and displayed in the B-17 Alliance Museum.
- Fabrication and repair of structural elements, supported by over 100 volunteers.
- Ongoing fundraising to secure the restoration hangar through purchase, ensuring project continuity.
No major setbacks, such as project cancellation or structural failures, have been reported. The aircraft is not yet flight-ready but is progressing toward eventual operation, joining a select group of preserved B-17s.
